Ask which appointment you need
“Renewal” can refer to recertification, nutrition education or arranging the next benefits. These are not interchangeable. Call your county office, explain the notice you received and ask what visit is due for each family member. Appointment timing depends on your certification and circumstances; there is no universal date to renew through this website.
Prepare for recertification
Ask whether WIC needs updated income, address, identification or health measurements. Use the certification checklist and follow the clinic’s directions for your appointment type. Report relevant household changes to the WIC team so it can review your case.
Each participant must reapply at the end of the certification period, when WIC reassesses eligibility. Florida’s “How WIC Works” guide says you have the right to be told when it is time for you or your child to be recertified.
Check your appointment and benefit dates separately
The official Florida WIC app can display appointments and issued food benefits. A food benefit expiration date is not necessarily the same as a certification appointment date. Review both; do not assume unused foods carry forward. Florida states that unused benefits expire rather than rolling over.
If you missed a visit or see no benefits
Contact your county WIC office to find out what remains to be completed and arrange the next available appointment. Have your family information and notice ready for the official team. Card customer service can help with a card problem, but it does not replace a certification visit. See which WIC number to call if the issue is using the card.
Someone else will bring my child
Tell WIC in advance if another adult needs to handle the appointment. Florida distinguishes a proxy, who can shop or pick up benefits, from a co-caretaker, who shares primary care and can bring a child for recertification. A proxy must be at least 16. A co-caretaker can be a parent, whether or not they live in the child’s home, or another adult (18 or older) who lives in the child’s home, and must share primary responsibility for the child’s care.
Ask the clinic to confirm who is recorded on your account and what identification that person needs. Being able to shop with the card does not by itself establish authority to complete a child’s recertification.
A foster child has changed homes
Contact WIC to update the child’s household information. The Florida foster-child handout says a change from one foster home to another does not itself require recertification. Ask which existing appointment and benefit dates remain in effect. Notify WIC when placement changes or the child is no longer in foster care.
When an appointment and food dates do not line up
Write down three things separately: the next appointment, the end date of food benefits already issued, and the date WIC says further certification or education is due. If the food end date comes first, call before that date and explain the mismatch. Ask whether a visit or document is missing and when the team can review it.
Do not treat an empty balance as proof that you no longer qualify. It can require an account review, a new issuance or a card investigation; the local team can establish which applies. There is no guaranteed same-day reinstatement or retroactive benefit promise in this guide.
